Re: John Stones
Rio was 22 when he made the move to Leeds, maybe I am remembering it incorrectly but he had hardly played a match in a back 4 for us up to that stage with Harry saying he wanted to have 2 established players next to him. O'Leary at the time got a lot of praise for trusting him in a back 4 and what the media saw as a big improvement in his defensive play. Yes his talent was obvious and there is no denying he was a great player for us, but I think personally in 10 years time Stones will look back on a very similar career as Rio. He is a great English talent, with a lot to learn just as Rio did when he was the same age,

Re: John Stones
Think some have said a similar point.

Rio was the same type player but was making these mistakes at 18.

By 22 he was pretty much close to his best.

Stones is 22/23 now so needs to start learning fast.

Re: John Stones
Started off in midfield didn't he 1st season... and when he went to play in the back the next season he was played with the protection of 2 of Ruddock, Pearce and Reiper... Stones is playing in a flat back 4 for club and country and is expected to be that ball playing CH without the protection... defensively seen a marked improvement this season.. and he will get better in that field... not calling him a Rio but he's def' the nearest I have seen since him in his younger days

Re: John Stones
I remember that too, Sold0, but there was never really a doubt about what he WOULD become by anyone. And he was doing that as a teenager with us, when we were pretty average. By the time he was 22, that had been more or less erased, when he got his move.

Stones is 22 now, and looks like Rio did when he was 18.

Re: John Stones
Rio had plenty of defensive gaffs in him when he was young with us... remember him getting the right run around by Zola and co at Chelsea... the older you get the better defender you get... especially at centre half

Eerie Descent 12:12 Thu Oct 20
Re: John Stones
He is top quality on the ball, however, the big difference between him and Rio is Rio was first and foremost a defender, and he was absolutely world class at that. Stones will improve, but will never be world class at defending, he just doesn't seem to have the instinct.

Northern Sold 11:47 Thu Oct 20
Re: John Stones
The daft thing with Rio is I think he could have been an even better player than he was.. played in a back 3/5 and allowed to be the sweeper job he was born to do he could have been muttered in the same breath as the Kaiser and Mooro... but O'Leary knocked that out of him... he was always a brilliant defender... but he had that other thing hidden in his locker that we never always released...

Re: John Stones
He is not in Rios class, but very few ever will be.

Man City still playing Kolarov and Zabaleta is the biggest issue.

Re: John Stones
This thread belongs with other classics like Matt Prior and Jonny Bairstow will never make it as international cricketers and Don Hutchinson is a far better player than Lampard and we got the deal if the century !

At least for once it's not a terrible comparison though.

Re: John Stones
I must also say I haven't seen anything in him that indicates he has the class of Rio.
Promising player who should develop under Guardiola but nowhere near the natural ability of Rio.
£50m is obviously ridiculous but that's just the modern game and not his fault.

Didn't see the game but playing with 10 men against Messi, Suarez and Neymar might be a tough task for any defender.

Re: John Stones
As an England supporter I'm very glad he's being coached by Guardiola - if he can't make him exceptional, no-one can. I've seen a difference for England already - he's coming out of defence and attacking with more confidence.

He isn't meant to be the finished article yet. He's got time and the potential.

Re: John Stones
Thing about last night is it isn't only 1 world class CF, it's 3. Ridiculous really. A total freak.

How did he get on against LUKAKU on Saturday? I've only seen the goal.

He's clearly talented, but threads like this after a game against Barca are ridiculous in my opinion.

I don't think he's ever been in the class of Rio though. Those comparisons over the last couple of years are way off for me.

Re: John Stones
I would say the best time to judge a much hyped player is when he comes up against the world best, otherwise what other yardstick can we use, do we judge him on how he will shackle Burnley's strikers next week? Fact of the matter is this much hyped defender come up against the best last night and looked woefully out of his deph. I'm by no means saying the fella won'tmake it to the top, but he clearly has a way to go. So the question now is will he get there over the next couple of years? Who knows.

Didn't watch the game and not gonna judge Stones on last night but what I have seen in the main I think he is a hell of a talent... got a lot to learn still and he will ...but has all the makings to be a real real player... abso love him at our place

Re: John Stones Paint Trophy
He is young still, but he's 22 not 18. Last night would have been a massive wake up call for him, realising he still has a long way to go before he's as good as we keep being told he is. You can only talk about potential for so long, at some point he has to walk the walk. Still, I'm sure he will be outstanding again at the weekend.
